On Mysteries and Mythologies

It is far easier to know something, than to hold space for mystery.

Mystery is something that is theoretically knowable, but quite possibly always out of reach to simple knowledge.

Something about knowing is that once you know one thing in particular - you fail to realize the other possibilities. In other words, when you choose to focus on one thing, you lose the options of those other things being available. But the obvious alternative, to not choose a focus, is difficult.

Not knowing is difficult.

Perhaps it is possible to approach mystery with this flexible and transformation-able tool: mythology.

Historically, mythology is a when you explain a mystery with a made-up story. The story is based on limited evidence, and maybe we all know it's not really true. But it feels nicer to have a fake story than no story at all.

Think about how kids learn about say, The Easter Bunny, while approaching the mystery of the cycles of life and death, birth and rebirth, nature and growth and the blooming and eventually palliative phases of life. These things are complicated. They want to be intuitive instead of misunderstood. But The Easter Bunny! Is easy to understand, fun, and a good placeholder for the more developed ideas and attitudes that take time to hold up wholistically.

So that's a dramatic, larger than life example. But it might be true that simple mysteries are far more prevalent than we, we who long to know with certainty, than we account for. So... how to develop a practice, like meditation or contemplation. An intellectual way of being that doesn't simply let go of knowledge in preference of unknowable mystery. No, instead, approaching the unknowable with the mythological tools available by admittedly incomplete knowingness. Which is better than nothing. Ignorance! If you can get past the frustration, and not give up on the developing strategies for growth! Maybe it can be bliss, too.

Appropriately, I am far away from completion on this idea. And it might be that I never reach full definition. Knowledge and understanding being cardboard cutout stand-ins for the real, the realizations, the activated fulfillments of truth/mystery.

Anyways I'd be curious to know what you all (merely? nahhhh) think about this, in these or any such temporary and insufficient terms. Haha. idfk. Gimme myths, stories, poetry, art and music, silence, and maybe the odd rambling blog nonsense thank you very much!
