for All Souls Day
A WORD for the dead, on this day of the dead: All Soul’s Day. All SOULS living and dead. Whether or not you believe in the immortal soul, believe this:
the sum of the life you have lived, every day of it, every person you have touched, connected with, kept in touch, remembered; in this reality or any of them, no matter how fantastic, virtual, or mundane... animals and people both, and beams of sunshine through canopies parted, and clouds with their silky silhouettes, their lining, and the morning sun beating upon your face, your closed eyes still absorbing that morning warmth... your soul and every soul, in any religion, faith or dare eye say skepticism..... these contents are no small part of a soul’s worth.
I believe that there is more than a “matching donation” for a Soul in Heaven ... that throughout this place here, and in whatever dimension or form the next one takes, what has been lived is not lost, no. The time we have spent is gone to us now, but if ever it was, it will be forever. It will be so much more than you can possibly imagine. How can you not attempt to imagine so? I know, I know, talk is cheap. Words simply spin a web between two distant extreme states. And that web simply traps flying dreams as they rocket through the stratosphere, wraps them up in silk, before feeding them to you.
I know, I know, dreams are indulgent escapes from the here-and-now, from pressing needs. But social media... for all I’ve thought and said and published about it.... what a beautiful dream! This is a place where we can openly and I hope, fearlessly share our dreams with all of our (hundreds or even thousands of) closest Friends!
So Carpe that Diem, seize that carp, that mackerel, that rainbow trout, as long as time and heart and intentions are free, live every day like it was your last. Smile like you mean it. Dance like no one’s watching. Love like everyone IS.
Because one day you will leave this world, suitcase of memories (not just yours) in hand to the next one.
And if you think That’s sad, remember that before that, many many people you know and love will leave you forever. Some of them stars, and heroes. As we’ve all been aware of each one as they blink out in the sky of our mind’s eye. Recent stars like Robin Williams and Tom Petty. I’m sure you can name dozens of beautiful, irreplaceable souls that have left their early dew long in our webs. We mourn for their loss of life, and we grieve for our loss, of what more could have been... remember that wherever there is loss, it is only as hard as it used to be good. So collect your tears inside and out, and be thankful for them. They are the soul’s memory being released.
I’m going to start this memorial page, just as an idea. The internet has among its curiosities, a death clock for each one of us (how morbid and profane) but where, yes on the internet, where out here is life and death still sacred? St. Peter needs a secretary that can do Social Media. I’m serious.
Life is precious. The ghosts of past, present and future can’t come a moment too soon. Today is a holy day. Just these names, for now, I light a candle to:
Bo Roberts
Michael Burgos
Pascale Menconi
Heather Cooke
Nat Farber
Irene Farber
my mom’s friend Joyce
Khanun
Art and Helen Wahlers
These are family and friends that have graced my life brilliantly before they passed. I remember each of them fondly... though I have regrets of not always showing it. Love is fast and slow, old and new, hidden and revealed. I miss you loves. I hope that wherever you are, you remember me fondly, too.
